While all states have a SRTS coordinator, few, if any, have been at it as long as Pat Pieratte with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). She just retired after 35 years with the department, serving six years as the SRTS coordinator. Before she left to go folk dancing in Croatia and Slovenia, there was a gathering to talk about her successes and wish her well.
The first Ohio network meeting was held on Tuesday, June 19 at the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Central Office, to kick off the Safe Routes Partnership’s efforts in Ohio.
One of the exciting aspects of the Safe Routes Partnership’s state network project is the uniqueness of the seven different states. And while this uniqueness is the culture, the people and the geography, one thing is certain, they just can’t get enough of Safe Routes to School!
Superheros Among Us: Last week I had the pleasure to attend a New Jersey Partnership for Healthy Kids strategic planning meeting where I got to meet many of New Jersey’s real life superheroes. If you were there, you know that as part of the introductions, we all got to declare what our super power would be if we had one. They were all noble.

The seven states that comprise the state network project are all moving at a fast pace. Since the state advocacy organizers began in early March, they continue to make many very key contacts throughout their states.
Growing up in Berea, Ohio, I walked to school, played outside and rode my bike in our part of the Cleveland Metro Parks. My love of the outdoors and community service started there during elementary school –a park cleanup and stream restoration in the 5th grade showed me how people can make positive changes in their community.
