The Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC) is working on a community engagement project to receive feedback on their recently released transportation plan titled “The Traffic Relief Plan.” This month, RCTC developed an interactive website where residents can access the plan and submit a survey to give feedback on proposed strategies to reduce congestion. The plan highlights geographic profiles including transportation corridors with problem areas of congestion and safety concerns. Positive proposed strategies include policies to improve Safe Routes to School, increase transit/metro zero emission infrastructure, and invest in biking and walking improvements. However, we are concerned that strategies are also identified to expand the 91, 215, 60 freeways, which are highways that already have a multitude of lanes.
Safe Routes Partnership looks forward to providing feedback on supporting investment in active transportation and Safe Routes to School, especially in rural and environmental justice areas. We will also provide comments discouraging highway expansion, which will lead to more congestion and sprawl. RCTC will provide an update on the Traffic Relief Plan at the next Riverside County Active Transportation Network meeting on February 19th.
