The Safe Routes Partnership will be convening Active Transportation Networks (ATN) alongside partner coalition meetings in San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties. On October 17, the ATN will meet in conjunction with the Stanislaus Sustainable Communities Coalition in Modesto, at which there will be a presentation of a Safe Routes to School Action Plan developed by the Airport Neighborhood Collaborative. Then, on November 13, the Network will convene in Stockton at a meeting of the Healthy Neighborhoods Collaborative.

Join us and The Alliance for Healthy Orange County, as we will be hosting a Community Vigil and Forum in Santa Ana on Tuesday, September 25th at 6:00 pm. The Vigil and Forum is sponsored by SCAG’s Go Human Campaign as a part of their Community Engagement Call. We will be facilitating a discussion around highlights from our 2018 Orange County Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety Issue Brief. A vigil will be held ahead of the discussion forum to honor pedestrian and bicyclist victims of traffic crashes who lost their lives.

In California’s Central Valley region, the Safe Routes Partnership is working in the counties of San Joaquin, Stanislaus, and Fresno. Housing and transportation costs in Central Valley often exceed 70 percent of income for moderate income households.  The lack of affordable transportation options puts stress on families. In addition, the region struggles with poor air quality.

In early May, California Senior Policy Manager Jonathan Matz joined our partners in the Sustainable Communities for All coalition (SC4A) in Sacramento to lobby state lawmakers for an equitable portfolio of investments from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF). Among the programs SC4A would like to see funded from the GGRF this year are Urban Forestry and Urban Greening; the Low Income Home Weatherization Program; and transit passes for K-14 students in public education institutions.

Last month, a group of youth and community residents initiated a meeting with Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes of the 47th District in San Bernardino County. Youth representatives from the group Soar IE envisioned an initiative for safer sidewalks around neighborhood schools in Muscoy. Muscoy is unincorporated area of San Bernardino that has a CalEnviroScreen pollution burden profile of 96-100%, is low-income, and the population is 82 percent Latinx.

On February 21st, the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG)  released a draft of their Public Participation Plan and is currently soliciting feedback until April 21st. The Morongo Valley Basin in Southern California, which includes the areas of Joshua Tree, Yucca Valley and Twentynine Palms in San Bernardino County, is embarking on the development of an Active Transportation Plan. The Morongo Valley Active Transportation Plan (MV Plan) has developed a stakeholder committee to discuss and provide major feedback for the plan--which will include Safe Routes to School components and walking/biking connections to Joshua Tree National Park.

The Safe Routes Partnership facilitates regional active transportation networks (ATNs) in several locations throughout California with quarterly meetings. These ATNs serve as an informational hub for community based organizations and public agencies to share information on best practices and upcoming funding competitions and to engage in increasing active transportation investments and policy.
