Safe Routes to School Yearbook: We Want Your Photos & Videos!

Last year we released our Making Strides State Report Cards which painted a high level picture of Safe Routes to School programs across the country. Now, we are taking a closer look at Safe Routes to School stories, successes, and best practices from state and local programs to weave a detailed tapestry of work across the country. Our goal is to share glimpses of what is working well in other states and to highlight program successes in upcoming events like the 2025 Safe Routes to School Virtual Summit and Safe Routes to School 20th Year Anniversary celebrations, and in a new companion resource to the Making Strides state report cards - a Safe Routes to School yearbook! And we need YOUR help!

Share your best moments

We’re looking for photos and videos that capture the joy, energy, and impact of walking, biking, and rolling to school. Whether it’s a big event or an everyday commute, we want to see it all!

What We’re Looking For:

  • Smiling faces of students, families, and school staff enjoying their trips to school
  • Action shots of kids walking, biking, or rolling in safe and fun ways
  • Creative commutes (think scooters, adaptive bikes, or even a walking school bus!)
  • Group moments with friends, families, or school leaders
  • Safe travel behaviors like using crosswalks, wearing helmets, and following traffic rules
  • School and neighborhood backdrops that showcase your community

⭐ How to take and submit great photos

You don’t have to be a pro! Just follow these simple tips:

✅ DO:

  • Take bright, clear photos (natural light is best!)
  • Capture a mix of close-ups and wide shots
  • Show kids in action—walking, biking, rolling, and having fun
  • Make sure helmets are properly fitted and buckled
  • Show safe behaviors like stopping at crosswalks and looking both ways
  • Include diversity! We love seeing different ages, abilities, and backgrounds

🚫 AVOID:

  • Blurry or dark photos
  • Clothing with large logos, branding, or words
  • Unsafe behaviors (e.g., riding without a helmet, crossing streets without looking)

Don’t forget captions

Every great photo tells a story. When you send your pictures, include a short caption with:

  • Who’s in the photo (first names or a general description like “third-grade students”)
  • Where it was taken (school name, city, or event name)
  • What’s happening (e.g., “Students enjoying 2024 Bike to School Day!”)

How to submit items

Send your photos and videos to info@saferoutespartnership.org by Monday, June 2, 2025.

Make sure to include in the email:

    • Pro tip! Name your files like GEORGIA_1 and then write your caption in the email: GEORGIA_1: Kids riding their scooters around Lakebottom Park
  • Have videos on Youtube? Great! Send us the YouTube video link and let us know what is happening in the video in the body of the email.

Tech stuff

  • Send high-resolution photos (300 DPI, 1920x1080)
    • Not sure? Send them anyway!
  • Save files in JPG or PNG format (no HEIC files, please!)
  • Send just the photos: no need to put them in a Word document

Why participate?

Your photos and videos will help tell the story of Safe Routes to School nationwide! Plus, you’ll be helping inspire more schools and families to get involved in active transportation!

Thank you for being part of this movement! We can’t wait to see your photos and celebrate the impact of Safe Routes to School together.

By uploading photos or videos of children, you confirm you have permission to share them and allow us to post them online. If unsure, check with your partner school’s media release policy.

Submitted materials, with or without names, may be used in publications, presentations, websites, social media, or other media formats, now or in the future, to support the Safe Routes Partnership’s mission, including education, training, research, marketing, and outreach.
