As you may know, we are cosponsors of the Complete Streets for All bill, SB 760, in the California State Senate.
If enacted, Senate Bill 760 would:
- Provide strong direction to the California Transportation Agency (Caltrans) to create “Complete Streets,” including safer sidewalks, bikeways, and crosswalks, on roads owned and managed by Caltrans in our cities, towns, and neighborhoods.
- Prioritize the use of State Highway Account funds for accessibility improvements for ALL users of the transportation system (not just cars) which will reduce vehicle miles traveled and promote active living.
- Require Caltrans to explicitly include complete streets improvements in the Asset Management Plan process with performance measures and reporting requirements.
- Define a process for how complete streets should be incorporated into future projects through robust engagement with communities and local governments.
SB 760 will institutionalize complete streets, safe routes to school, and active transportation investments throughout our state, and ensure that the many urban arterials and rural main streets owned by CalTrans are safe and accessible for all users.
Last spring, SB 760 became a two-year bill, which means that it needs to pass the State Senate this January to be enacted into law this session. We just learned that the bill be heard in committee on January 9, which means we need to gather support letters by January 2.
